Mozilla launches second Firefox 3.1 alpha

The Mozilla Corporation has released an advance testing version of its popular Firefox Web browser. The second alpha of Firefox 3.1 was made available overnight. The software, code-named Shiretoko, is at this stage intended for software developers and testers only, with the stable and recommended version of Firefox being 3.0.1.

Mozilla said the testing version of Firefox introduced several new features, including the browser's highly anticipated support for a new video tag element introduced with the HTML 5 standard to provide more functionality around the amount of video that is increasingly being delivered through Web browsers. It also allows users to drag and drop tabs between browser windows, improves performance in some areas and provides better integration with Windows Vista's Aero 'Glass' theme for those wanting to add extra themes on top of Firefox.

It also adds speed enhancement to the browser.Mozilla is planning to integrate a faster JavaScript engine, dubbed TraceMonkey, into Firefox.

The new Mozilla Firefox 3.1 can be downloaded here

Joost's new browser-based player

Finally, Joost is going to correct the error that badly hobbled the Web video service many once considered to be a serious YouTube competitor.

Currently available for Windows and Mac, Joost is planning to launch a test version of its new site later this month that will feature a browser-based plug-in and will no longer require users to watch via the company's much maligned desktop client. In a not so surprising move, users will be able to embed Joost's videos.

CEO Mike Volpi acknowledged that the desktop client was one of the company's missteps but that the new browser-based player would provide ease of use, a high-quality video experience, and more content.

US OPEN 2008 DOUBLES RESULTS

Briton Jamie Murray and American Liezel Huber were beaten 7-6 6-4 in the final of the mixed
doubles at the US Open by fifth seeds Cara Black and Leander Paes.

TENNIS 2008 US Open final participants Jamie Murray, Liezel Huber, Leander Paes, Cara Black.

More DETAIL:

Murray had been hoping to add a second Grand Slam mixed doubles title to the Wimbledon one he won in 2007 while paired with Serb Jelena Jankovic. But having squandered two set points in the first set tiebreaker, Murray and Huber never looked recovering and conceded their serve in the fifth game of the second set, after a poor service game from the Scot that included two double faults.

"It wasn't a tough loss, they were just the better team," Huber said. "They have so much experience and have won so many titles, so it was an honour to play them."Paes, who has now won eight Grand Slam doubles titles, signalled his intent to target Murray in the opening point of the game as he fired a smash at the Scot, hitting him on the back.

The only break points of the first set fell to Black, Huber's regular women's doubles partner, and Paes in the eighth game. But Murray demonstrated quick hands at the net, before Huber fired down a service winner to get them out of trouble.

A first tie break quickly followed with Murray and Huber racing out to a 4-2 lead at the change of ends before a smash to the feet of Paes earned the unseeded pair two set points.
But both chances went begging with Black placing a forehand volley between Murray and Huber before the Scot dumped a volley into the net.

The fifth seeds stole the first set at their first attempt when Paes buried a forehand volley into
acres of space on the opposite side of the court.Murray and Huber held break points in just the second game of the second set but failed to take advantage once again when Paes fired down a couple of huge serves.

From that moment on, the fifth seeds rarely looked troubled, not only breaking in the fifth game but also holding break points in the third and seventh games.Black and Paes, who could both still add to this title with the women's and men's doubles titles respectively, wrapped up victory at the first attempt when Huber hit a forehand return of serve into the net.
Finally Black/Paes won.

TOP TECHNICAL GADGETS

1)Nintendo DS Lite:

Nintendo has cracked out the scalpel to perform the mother of all makeovers on its innovative
touchscreen machine. Having seemingly studied at the iPod night-school of cool, the DS has been toughened up, brightened up and made into a genuine rival to the PSP.

Where the DS Mark 1 felt about as robust as a dunked Rich Tea, the build quality of the Lite is reassuringly solid. Despite being 20 per cent lighter, its new compactness and deluxe, polished finish make it feel more, not less, substantial.

The top screen now clicks weightily into place. The motion of the new volume and power switch sliders is satisfyingly smooth, and the stylus is now larger and less tooth-picky. You?ll find the rubberised and remoulded directional pad, face and shoulder buttons more comfortable, too.

Both LCD screens, although no bigger than before, are now significantly brighter, producing brilliantly vivid colours that inject new life into all your old games. You can now manually flick between four brightness levels. The upgraded battery gives you about seven hours on full beam (that?s three hours more than PSP), and up to a marathon 19 hours on its dimmest setting.

DS and PSP used to occupy opposite ends of the playground, with Nintendo?s machine the snot-nosed brat to PSP?s suave, multi-media headboy. Today, supported by a diverse games library, free global Wi-Fi gaming, and the upcoming bespoke Opera Web browser with touchscreen links, Nintendo?s ?toy? has truly come of age.

2)Sony Ericsson P900i:

Sony Ericssons P990i was a feature packed fella Wi-Fi, QWERTY keypad, touchscreen you name it, he did it. But it showed. Every time you went away on business you had to book it an extra seat on the plane.

The new P900i is 25 per cent smaller than its older brother, but still as well equipped as a pinstriped Swiss army knife. Youll get Wi-Fi, 3G, a full QWERTY keypad and VoIP capabilities all running on a UIQ OS.

Mini-QWERTYphobes have the option of handwriting recognition on the 2.6in touchscreen and itll come with 160MB of built-in brains. As with most Sony Erics youll be able to stash some extra in the MicroSD slot should you run out of space.

But dont let your mind stray too far from business; therell be plenty of time for fun at the weekend. The P1 gets a new hint of fruit with support for BlackBerry Connect email and a business card scanner that imports all details directly into your contacts.

When the weekend does finally come, the 3.2MP cam will cope with some casual snapping, there's wire-free music via A2DP Bluetooth, and for fans of the wireless (no, the old kind) theres an FM radio too.

3) Nokia N95:

It takes a deep intake of breath to roll off the feature list of the Stuff-proclaimed ‘best phone ever’, but here goes. For your connectivity and web-surfing needs, there’s the full spectrum of Wi-Fi, HSPDA and stereo Bluetooth, which goes nicely with the 2.6in QVGA screen.

Then, to replace your dusty compact, there’s a 5MP camera with a Carl Zeiss lens and built-in flash. Inside, it has 160MB of internal memory along with a microSD slot for you to store all your music, photos and video. And then there’s the cherry on top: a GPS receiver to guide you home.
